News from Region 28's Registrar

Gee, it seems we've not taken a breather from the 1999 season and we are back again ready to begin yet another great season. For those players and families who played this past Spring Season (my family included), and many of these Spring teams just had their finale tournament in San Diego the weekend of July 15, well guess what? Coaches will be given their new rosters for the 2000 season and players will be back on the field soon after August 7 (so much for my summer off!).

Spring Soccer is for the truly dedicated, passionate players who thrive on playing soccer year-round (and want to put mom and dad through endless days of practice, scrimmages, etc.). Spring practices begin in early February and these teams will play through June. The majority of these teams also enter many tournaments between January and July and the camaraderie between players and families is amazing. Tournaments cost money (entry fees average $500!) and the teams must fund their own tournament fees, therefore, scores of players will immerse into a variety of team fundraisers such as garage sales, car washes, candy sales, etc. All in all, this kind of interaction outside the field is what truly makes a team a sort of a "family" I say this because it seems we see these kids and their families, sometimes more than we see our extended families (this is my own personal experience). In the end, teams will have traveled to play in far away places such as Hawaii, San Diego, Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Lancaster... Many families take advantage of these weekend tournaments and turn them into weekend vacations (our team and another team took over a bulk of the rooms at the Days Inn in San Diego). It is always great to come home with a medal, however, the kids remember their stay at the hotel, going sightseeing, eating out, having fun, and if they bring home a medal, great, if they don't win too many games then they have the memories of the activities outside the field.

For many of you new families, you probably have no idea about Spring Soccer since you are just embarking onto the fall season, well, as the fall season nears completion you will hear many players talk about Spring Soccer. If you child is interested in continuing to play after the fall season ends, for Spring Soccer information please refer questions to any Region 28 board member.

Behind the scenes work continues and we look forward to Opening Day on Saturday September 9. Please mark your calendar, we will hold our traditional Bake Sale / BBQ - more information will follow, and remember to put on your volunteer hat as members of the volunteer committee will be asking the families to help out at the Bake Sale/BBQ. Trust me you will have fun and the kids will have a great day of Soccer.
